The Building Services Engineer is responsible for supporting the design, coordination and delivery of mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems on assigned projects.  

 

Reporting to the Senior Building Services Engineer or Building Services Manager, the role contributes to high-quality, safe and compliant building services installations. The Building Services Engineer ensures design and construction activities align with project requirements, statutory standards and company procedures. 

 

Responsibilities

Design & Technical Support 

  • Assist in the preparation, review and verification of MEP designs and specifications.  
  • Coordinate with the design team to ensure MEP systems integration with other disciplines.  
  • Provide technical input during tender and pre-construction stages, including feasibility and constructability assessments.  
  • Support Senior Engineers in the development of detailed drawings, calculations and schedules.  

 

Project Delivery 

  • Contribute to the planning, installation, testing and commissioning of MEP systems.  
  • Monitor compliance with project design, contract documents, statutory requirements and quality standards.  
  • Support site teams in resolving technical issues, ensuring practical and cost-effective solutions.  
  • Participate in site inspections and audits to ensure adherence to design and safety standards. 

 

Compliance & Risk Standard 

  • Ensure MEP works comply with statutory, regulatory and company standards.  
  • Report and assist in the investigation of technical issues, design discrepancies or site incidents.  
  • Maintain awareness of industry standards, legislation and emerging technologies affecting building services. 
  • Stakeholder Engagement 
  • Liaise with senior engineers, project managers, contractors and consultants to support project delivery.  
  • Provide clear technical reports, drawings and updates to project stakeholders.  
  • Support client and regulatory communications under the direction of senior staff. 

 

Professional Development 

  • Continuously develop technical knowledge and competency in MEP systems and construction methods.  
  • Engage with internal knowledge-sharing sessions and contribute to the dissemination of best practice.  

Experience

Essential 

  • Experience in mechanical, electrical or building services engineering within construction projects.  
  • Understanding of MEP design, installation and commissioning processes.  
  • Competence in technical problem-solving, decision-making and site-based issue resolution.  
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, able to work with multidisciplinary teams.  
  • Ability to prioritise workload and work under supervision to meet project deadlines.  

 

Desirable 

  • Familiarity with statutory and regulatory requirements for building services.  

 

Qualifications

Essential 

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical, Electrical or Building Services Engineering.  
  • Knowledge of design software such as AutoCAD, Revit or BIM applications.  
  • Understanding of CDM, Building Regulations and Health & Safety legislation relevant to MEP works.  

Desirable: 

  • Professional membership with a recognised body (CIBSE, IET or equivalent).  
  • Experience with project delivery on complex or multi-discipline construction projects.  
  • Exposure to energy efficiency, sustainability or low-carbon MEP design.
